1. An example of giving from the Bible
   • 2Corinthians 8:5 - "Gave their own selves to the Lord"
   • 2Corinthians 8:2 - "In a great trial... joy... abounded." They did not make affliction and deep poverty an excuse for not giving.
   • 2Corinthians 8:4 - "Praying us with much intreaty." They did not wait to be urged.
   • 2Corinthians 8:11 - "Perform the doing of it." They let their intentions become actions, and gave willingly.
2. The giving believer
   • 2Corinthians 9:7 - "God loveth a cheerful giver." The spirit in which we should give.
   • 2Corinthians 8:9 - "Christ... though He was rich... for your sakes He became poor." The reason we should give.
   • 2Corinthians 9:6 - "He which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully." The reward of giving.
3. Three things are to be remembered in Christian giving
   1. The Person to whom we give is the Lord
      • Exodus 35:5 - "An offering unto the Lord"
      • Philippians 4:18 - "A sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God"
   2. How we should give
      • 1Corinthians 16:2 - "First day of the week." We should give systematically.
      • 1Corinthians 16:2 - "Every one of you." We should give individually.
      • 2Corinthians 8:12,13 - "A willing mind." We should give willingly (see also 2Corinthians 8:3).
      • 1Corinthians 16:2 - "As God hath prospered." We should give proportionately.
      • Leviticus 27:30 - "All the tithe... is the Lord's." We should give the Lord what is His.
      • Malachi 3:8 - "Wherein have we robbed Thee? In tithes." We should give honestly.
      • 2Corinthians 9:7 - "Cheerful giver." We should give cheerfully.
      • Luke 21:3,4 - "All the living that she had." We should give sacrificially (see also 2Corinthians 8:2).
   3. The reward of giving
      • Acts 20:35 - "It is more blessed to give than to receive"
      • Matthew 6:20 - "Treasures in heaven"
      • 2Corinthians 9:7 - "God loveth a cheerful giver"
      • Hebrews 13:16 - "With such sacrifices God is well pleased"
      • Malachi 3:10 - "Pour you out a blessing"
