The unbeliever is in a two-fold error. He thinks that Christians are in bondage and that he is free. In fact, this situation is exactly reversed.

1. The unbeliever is not free
   1. The unbeliever is in bondage to sin
      • John 8:34 - "Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin"
      • Romans 7:14 - "Sold under sin"
   2. The unbeliever is in bondage to self
      • Romans 7:23 - "Bringing me into captivity to the law of sin"
      • Ephesians 2:3 - "Fulfilling the desires of the flesh"
   3. The unbeliever is in bondage to Satan
      • 2Timothy 2:26 - "Taken captive by him at his will"
      • John 8:44 - "Your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do"
2. The believer is free
   1. Free through Christ
      • John 8:36 - "The Son shall make you free"
      • Galatians 5:1 - "Christ hath made us free"
   2. Free from present condemnation
      • Romans 8:1 - "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ"
      • John 3:18 - "He that believeth on Him is not condemned"
   3. Free from future judgment
      • John 5:24 - "Shall not come into condemnation"
      • 1Thessalonians 1:10 - "Delivered us from the wrath to come"
      • Galatians 3:13 - "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse"
   4. Free from bondage to sin
      • Romans 6:14 - "Sin shall not have dominion over you"
      • Romans 6:18,22 - "Free from sin"
      • Romans 8:2 - "Free from... sin and death"
   5. Free from the law
      • Romans 10:4 - "Christ is the end of the law"
      • Galatians 3:24,25 - "No longer under"
      • Galatians 4:5 - "Were under the law"
      • Romans 7:6 - "Delivered from the law"
   6. Free from fear
      • Hebrews 2:14,15 - "Deliver them who through fear of death were... subject to bondage"
      • Psalm 23:4 - "I will fear no evil"
      • Romans 8:15 - "Ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear"
      • 1John 4:18 - "There is no fear in love." The "perfect love" is God's.
   7. Free from care
      • 1Peter 5:7 - "Casting all your care upon Him"
      • Philippians 4:6 - "Be careful [anxious] for nothing"
      • Matthew 6:25 - "Take no thought for your life"
