Inspiration of the Scriptures

The Testimony of Christ

The Old Testament
1. Moses is credited with writing the first five books of the Old Testament, also known as the Pentateuch.
  - Matthew 22:24-32 - "Moses said" (v.24), "The Scriptures" (v.29), and "Spoken unto you by God" (v.31)
  - Mark 7:8-13 - Connect "Commandment of God" (v.9 with "Moses said" (v.10)
  - Mark 12:26 - "Book of Moses... God spake unto him"
  - John 5:46 - "Moses... wrote of Me"
  - Luke 24:25-27 - "Beginning at Moses... He expounded... the Scriptures"
  - John 17:17 - "Thy word is truth"
2. Christ confirms that the miraculous stories of the Old Testament are true.
  - Luke 17:27 - "The flood came"
  - Luke 17:29 - "Destroyed them all [in Sodom]"
  - Luke 17:32 - "Remember Lot's wife"
  - Matthew 12:40 - "Jonah was... in the whale's belly"
  - Luke 4:27 - "[Naaman] was cleansed"
3. Christ confirms that the Psalms and prophetic books are inspired.
  - Mark 12:36 - "David... said by the Holy Ghost"
  - Luke 4:17-21 - "This day... fulfilled"
  - Matthew 24:15 - "Spoken of by Daniel the prophet"
4. Christ taught verbal inspiration (every word of the Bible is inspired)
  - John 14:10 - "The words"
  - John 17:8 - "The words"
  - John 6:63 - "The words"
  - John 8:47 - "God's words"
  - John 12:48 - "My words"
  - Matthew 5:18 - "Jot... tittle"
The New Testament
Not one word of the New Testament had been written when Christ departed from the earth, but we have His express authority for receiving it as the inspired Word of God.
1. He said plainly He would leave the revelation of truth unfinished (John 16:12)
2. He promised that the revelation would be completed after His departure (John 16:13)
3. He chose certain persons to receive such additional revelations and to be His witnesses, preachers and teachers after His departure (Matthew 28:19,20; John 15:27; Acts 1:8; Acts 9:15-17)
4. Knowing beforehand what they would write, He gave their words precisely the same authority as His own.
  - Matthew 10:14-15 - "Your words"
  - Luke 10:16 - "Heareth you heareth Me"
  - John 13:20 - "Receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth Me"
  - John 17:20 - "Through their word"
